When saving a project is it normal for PRV windows to not be saved with the project, or am I missing a setting somewhere that might say, "Save all open window states, position and size, when saving!" Thank you!
Bump ... I need to know about this. It's a deal breaker if I can't save window layouts with projects. Someone please let me know if there is a way to save all open PVR windows when saving a project. If it's not possible then please tell me and I'll make a feature request. Thank you!
i notice that, while most window positions i use are remembered, at least some are not. you mention one. i don't use midi much so i wouldn't know about that but i do notice that the item properties window always opens near the center of my screen when reopening a project even if i've dragged it elsewhere. this is probably one of the many cases of needed refinement people sometimes mention. Back to this subject: My motive is to find a way to make Reaper "Large Midi Project" friendly, for use in film, TV and video scoring. Think of what you hear when you watch Discovery Channel, History Channel etc. Also, many full length feature films are initially "mocked up" using midi Orchestra and Vsti like Omnishpere, Stylus RMX, Trilian and some are finalized by rendering that midi and not ever using a "real" orchestra. That scenario is becoming more and more of a reality as time progresses. Many MANY popular TV series use almost all Vsti / Midi. One prominent example is "Flash Point". Great use of Stylus and Omnisphere in that one, and there are plenty of others. One of the very first and most memorable I remember was the series called "Heroes". Many really "hip" TV Action / Drama / Spy / Sci-Fi are scored with Vsti / midi. So, I'm thinking, why not make Reaper more usable, more attractive, for the people that are producing music for TV and Film. ----------------------- On to the specifics: It's not so much position and size of any windows, it's mainly about having all open windows, at the time of saving and closing a project, re appear when re opening that project. The reason is more easily explained by describing a few typical project layouts I use. Orchestral work: is typically 180+ tracks in 8 or more PRV windows. Each PRV is "generally" by orchestral section. 45 or more tracks for Strings in 1 PRV window. 16 tracks for WWinds in their own separate PRV window 8 Tracks for Brass their own separate PRV window 30 or so tracks for percussion and ethnic instruments their own separate PRV window 4 for harps / piano etc. And then a few "section of song" oriented windows where I might have horns, cellos, violas, violins, basoon only in 1 PRV, because that's whats going on for a part of the piece. Being able to selectively add or remove individual tracks from a PRV is important also. So you see, for me to have to re create each PRV window, ever time I open a project, would be crazy. ---------- Synth / Vsti work: Typically Omnisphere, Stylus RMX, Trilian would be a smaller layout but almost always 3 track folders, 3 Piano Roll Views Omnisphere PRV = 8 tracks Stylus PRV = 8 tracks Trilian PRV = 1 track But then there are also the project that use both Vsti and Full orchestra. ---------- I'm looking at it like: Reaper has got so much going for it, but has a limited market / user base because of specific things that other "potential" uses actually "can't live without". . Here's a typical Sonar 4.0.2 layout for me: .
You might want to check out the latest Reaper update (v4.51) that has vastly improved MIDI editing (editing more than one MIDI item at once, track list for selecting what to edit, etc). I'm thinking with this update you won't need to have multiple MIDI editors anymore. You can do everything from just one, because of track list :) Also, check out Reaper's screenset feature. It's global, rather than per-project, though.

Global ... interesting and seemingly heading in the right direction. Possibly being able to save a specific screen set with a project and having unlimited screen sets would get it there. I saw your link to the "More flexible click source / metronome" which reminded me of my short "roll your own metronome" idea that I've been using for more than 10 yrs. It puts a midi metronome to shame.
Screensets are there to globally position various toolbars, dockers, windows etc. I don't think there will ever be unlimited count of them (because there are actions that are bound to those 10 that are available, and you can't have unlimited actions, Reaper actually has a limit on max number of actions it can register, at the moment). But in any case, I look at your Sonar screenshot and I cringe. There's no need for all those windows, IMHO... it can all be remedied by nicely organizing stuff in folders (strings, winds, brass, perc, synths, whatever), then using the new MIDI editor tracklist to focus on what you want to edit...
I believe it can all be done in the track list, it's been extensively stress-tested since April :) Well, for your particular case, you WILL probably need to use multiple MIDI editors in the end.
