Three out of ten online purchases in Europe are made via mobile devices. In terms of mobile payments, smartphones are more popular than tablets.
Mobile online transactions are becoming especially popular in the UK. This is the conclusion made by Adyen, a company offering a service for making international online payments. According to its data, 27.2% of transactions worldwide were made via smartphones or tablets.
Tablets outperform PCs in online transactions
While tablets have not been particularly successful against the backdrop of the growing popularity of smartphones, when it comes to online payments, the average value of goods purchased via this type of device exceeds that of desktops and laptops for the first time since 2013. In the US, 26.7% of online payments were made via mobile devices, in Asia the same figure was 20%, and in Europe – 28.6%. In terms of individual markets, the UK is growing much faster than other countries. In the first three months of this year, 44.4% of online payments in the UK were made via mobile, more than half of which were made via smartphones.
Mobile is experiencing an impressive upswing
Roelant Prince, chief commercial officer at Adyen, said: “There is a seismic shift happening in mobile commerce. People are now comfortable spending money online. All mobile channels have seen an impressive upswing in the last year.”
