D5 SE AUTO mpg check & cup holder Query !!

I envy that mpg How does the ratchet system work on the cup holder????? I gues mine is not working???? It pops out and the holder is fully open If I squeeze the "arms" of the cup holder, they just spring back out when I let go of them>>> always thought there must be something wrong! I know an auto will sap some mpg - but as much as this??

There are 2 types of cupholder. Mine is an 02 model and used to have the rachet type. This is all hard plastic and uses the rachet to grip the can. When mine predictably broke it was replaced with a different type by my dealer. This one springs all the way out but has some rubber flappy type things to hold the can (similar to the cupholders by the handbrake.
