I have a S reg Volvo S40 16valve 2.0 litre, coming back on the M25 yesterday a spark plug went, sounded like a chinook helicopter in my bonnet! Had the RAC out & been told not to drive it as the thread has gone, they tried to put a new spark plug in but it just spun around...they advised me to get a new thread cut or a helicoil fitted...I've spent the entire day phoning around & no-one seems to do this....the couple of mechanics that will do it can't for the best part of a week but I need it done asap...one of them suggested to get a kit myself & do it...no idea how easy this would be. I live near Redhill, Surrey...any ideas or info would be very much appreciated!!!!!!

Its NOT the easiest job in the world, especially with the head on the engine, you've got to trap all the swarf (cuttings) somehow so they don't fall into the bores. Honestly unless you can get the head off, I'd say its a workshop job. Do you have any car tuners/race car engineers in your part of the world, They would have the gear to do it. Not sure I'd even try with the head off.. far too easy to make a total **** up, and then it would be bye bye head time!

no idea! i've only had the car a couple of months & i'm not the most knowledegable person when it comes to cars! i'm sure if i look into i will be able to find someone who can do the work but wouldn't know where to start & obviously i can't drive it & i live in the sticks! so the 2 options are: 1) cut a new thread - best done with the head off due to swarf or 2) fit a helicoil (assume this is easier & the head can stay on?) would i be right in what i've said above? cheers again

Thanks for the help & advice guys! I think I will DEFINATELY be leaving this to the professionals! I can't afford to mess it up...I guess I'll spend tomorrow phoning round...any advice as to what sort of company to go for? By that I mean in the Yellow Pages there's a few engineering sections...would a car engine tuning/engineering place do this work? Plus any idea of cost? Cheers
