Hi, I have standard fit 18" alloy wheels on my 2003 XC90 (80000 miles). I was having new tyres fitted today and the tyre fitter discovered that the insides of the wheels were wearing where the tyre bead sits, and were starting to go quite sharp. He has recommended that the wheels need replacing and has put the old tyres on for the time being. He says he has not seen it before on car wheels but has seen it on some HGV alloy wheels that have done a lot of mileage. He is an independant tyre dealer who does a lot of agricultural and commercial vehicle work for me, so he would be telling me about it unless it was genuine. Has anyone else come across this? Thanks

Never heard of that one before??? Obv the tyre is softer than the rim, so if, during the cause of rotation, there was excessive flexing, resulting in rubbing, I'd always expect the tyre to take the wear, rather than the rim - Is it possible that the tyres have been severely under inflated for a long period of time - This may result in excessive rubbing? Any pics? Mike

Sorry for the delay. Here is a pic. It is not very clear but it shows the inside edge of the wheel and while it should be smooth it has worn to quite a sharp edge. Both front wheels had worn like this and the rear ones had worn but not as badly. The car has always had Continental tyres on, and there was no problem with the tyre bead. My Volvo dealer has taken it up with Volvo, so we will see what the outcome is, but I would be very interested to know whether anyone has had this problem. The tyre company say they have never seen anything like it on a car, so it is very strange that all 4 wheels have worn. Cheers, Henry

Got any speed humps near where you live ? The ones where they space three across the road and you straddle them ? Local authorities install them then forget to maintain them. Look at some of them and the outer edges are all worn away where traffic straddles across them. Could it be you wheels are rubbing against these ?

So, by the response I guess it is fair to say this has not been a widespread problem with XC90 wheels... I still haven't heard back from the dealer. I will chase him up and report back what they say.
