Hey everyone, I've just gotten into the DVD recorder realm and have already had my share of some really awful discs. 1. The Usual Suspects: Is it just me or is something wrong if you can fit a two hour movie in a mere 3.2 gigs? The video quality is simply terrible. I don't understand considering they have an extra 1.5 gigs of free space on the disc, seems like a no brainer to use it all up. 2. Mulholland Drive: Who was the moron that didn't put any chapters in this thing?! I want to go find some authoring software and do it myself. The movie is one 2 hour long chapter! I stopped half way through watching and had to fast forward through half of it to get back to where I was. The best part is that if you try to go to the next chapter you get taken to the special features menu. I wanna strangle the boob that let this one get to the consumers like this. How about you guys? What are some awful discs you've seen and why?
Thunderbolt (funny release). Realy good picture quality except the black borders were encoded at approx R40,G40,B40 so they appeared grey instead of black, even on a TV set. Very frustrating to watch. So i just divx'd it and cropped off the borders.
- Dune R2: PAL 4:3, Dolby Surround, MANY compression artifacts - Braindead Red Edition R0 PAL: Widescreen 1.66:1, German DD 5.1, English stereo MPEG2 (which sounds like mono)!, very poor picture quality (not due to compression) - Get A Life R1 NTSC: Well, the source was probably not that good
--------------------- "It doesn't need park distance control, and hates decadence. That's just the way it is..." - The M Coupe
Dune (RC2, Germany): both the normal version (16:9) and the Collector's Edition (4:3) are poorly authored. The DVDs have no names ( they're called "UNTITLED" on PCs ), the main audio stream is only LPCM and the others don't exist at all but they aren't removed but only deactivated ( this causes e.g. FlaskMPEG to crash if you select anything but the first audio stream. FlaskMPEG? How long has it been since I used that crappy software anyway? ;) ). The thread should be called "poorly authored AND/OR POORLY ENCODED DVDs" since you're also speaking about video/audio quality which is no part of authoring itself but one step before it: encoding.

due to the fact that i work in the budget DVD area, i see lots of badly encoded/authored discs, where do i start? <-- VHS tapes recorded onto DVD, enough said. bit late, if i think of anymore tommorrow, ill add them... Enf... [edit] oh yea, remembered Avenue One is pretty bad too; [/edit]

haha, seen in its entirety? That break to take a piss for a minute must be the reason why I still have absolutley no clue what the hell that movie was about...not sure if it was just insanley good or insanley bad...gotta watch it again i guess. I did notice some odd lines and artifacts on certain scenes of mulholland drive as well but thought i was just sitting to close to the screen.... I just watched the usual suspects a little closer and now i see a nice greenish stripe on the left side of the screen. wonderful job whoever let that slip by. You guys seen the momento special edition dvd? I gotta admit the menu system they made was creative but a tad bit confusing.
Wings of Honneamise R1. (incorrectly set as progressive instead of interlaced, in addition to the worst interlacing artifacts ever.) Evangelion (All regions :p) Anything which removes the burnt-in location names and replaces it with uglyass subtitle streams.
This is all nothing in compare to Chinese DVD's. I saw 'Original Sin' DVD which had only 1 hour from movie, and it was 1 GB total. And I could give many other examples, but so much is enough. From European DVD's I recently saw 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves', German edition - very bad picture, borders even left right (~20 pixel at least), noisy, unsharp. Looks like VHS transfer.
