There isn't alot of difference visually in all honesty the 9 series looks very much like the 760 and was just an evolution of the 7 series. I'm sure someone will come on and give a big list of true differences. I've posted same response in both ;) Ali

9 are just a face lift of the 7 same engine in most 940 is just more areo and has the adition of sips side impact protection and the later ones have got the bags srs personaly 7 ,s are more non areo than areo but if some one wanted to swap my 9 for a 7 i would do it in a heartbeat

Different heater controls, Top of dash different, different headlights on the 740, although the later 760s were the same style. Saloons were different from the rear doors backwards. Thats it! I always thought it was a bit of a cheek giving the 940 a different model number, more of a 740 face lift-face lift.

940 Interior: ~ Heater controls (rotary instead of sliding type) ~ More rounded dash (total crap as things won't stay on top of it like the 740 type :)) ~ Slightly different seat stitching design ~ SRS, pre-tensioners, SIPS, etc ~ Integrated headrests on rear estate seats (absolute crap - why try to fix something that wasn't broken?) 940 Exterior: ~ All 940 had more of a slanted headlight/grille section (only looks a bit like it was grafted from a solid block of granite) ~ Saloon rear section raised about 4" in order to improve aerodynamic properties 940 Engines/Suspension: ~ 'Better' engines (LPT & HPT available) ~ Refined gearbox ~ Stiffer springs and/or bigger sway bar from '94 onwards

I sold this car after a very lengthy restoration, but it's just too pretty to remove from my sig.

By the way the 944/964's rear had to be raised a few inches because on the 744/764 the C pillar could snap on a heavy impact at the rear! It wasn't for aerodynamic reasons as far as I know.

The back of the 940's look bigger due to it being slightly higher, the biggest difference is the 940's don't look as 'squared off' as the 740's, the lights are in 2 parts & are deeper (top to bottom) the 7's are often refered to as the 'Brick' by our freinds over the pond due to the aerodynamic similarities to the common house brick, the later 9's were designed with a slightly .... errrr..... bent straight edge that Volvo seemed to like so much in the past, The 9 series is when Volvos started to develop curves to the point of the VERY SEXY C70
