what's your take on it? I've just read an artice in the latest TapeOP issue, where an engineer discusses (although not in great detail) how the mixer in ProTools is horrible. Seems not too long ago, there was also quite a stir over this in an issue of Electronic Musician, with a few engineers admitting their dislike for the overall sound of PT's mixer. Furhtermore, I've aslo read similar comments on another forum at the beginning of the year, though I can't remember which one, but again, all about this 'unflattering' PT sound you get when you mix within the program. Personally, I wouldn't know since I've never worked on a Neve or SSL, nor have I even mixed on a modest Mackie, routing the PT outs to it and back to a 2 track recorder. So, I don't exactly know what they're referring to. However, now that I've been at this for a few years and gathered some knowledge, I do find that each software does indeed have a signature sound, be it good or bad, I guess that's all subjective. As for the mixer in PT, well yes, I find it has it's signature sound as well, but I'm not sure I'm yet in a position to bash on the poor thing, though I admit that things can sound muddy rather quickly, if I can say at least that. I'd love to know what you guys think of all this, pros and non-pros alike... pk

To quote a friend of mine who is a multi platinum producer and engineer, one night when I asked him about the preferences in gear and the fine nuances that some professionals prefer in specific equipment : "Its all B%ll****,the whole lot of it,everyone in it,the whole thing top to bottom, they are all full of crap,if it sounds fine, its fine, end of discussion" So I'll leave you to make your own sense out of that.I personally think that a lot of these so called "pro's" are very suspect, and although I do agree that, for example, an avalon pre will sound good a lot faster than a mackie, I have never heard of a record failing to sell because of the gear it was recorded on. I have however, heard a thousand sad stories of good albums turning out as dogs because of WHO recorded them.
