Mics and amps, dude. Especially for that old timey rootsy rock appeal. If you are able to use the real stuff, don't cheat the sound with the bogus toys. You already found out it isn't the right stuff for some jobs.
I use the POD quite a bit, and you can get some nice sounds out of it - but for me, I've really needed to tweak with a Ren E.Q. and a Ren Compressor to get it right. Get your tone as close as possible and then play with it in PT.
That PRS and a Fender tube amp through a SM57 into a nice pre will do the trick. The PodPro sucks. The PodXT rocks, but if you've got the PRS, Fender, and a 57, you are set... -Tom
ps.....if you want to fatten up a PodPro sound and take the fuzz off the top, ad chorus effect #2 but make sure you turn the effect level down to 1/4 or less. that way you don't get that overpowering chorus a la Van Halen. but you get the benefit of having the full stereo spread .....record it into a stereo track.....
I've found that the pod pro doesn't layer well with it's self possibly due to the fact the digital is something that is pretty much consistent. whereas an anolog amp has inconsistences due to voltage fluctuations and temperature etc.. try running the pod in studio mode through a valve compressor, eq or something then take the line out of the pod and plug that into an amp an cab then mic that to get some real room air in the mix this will give you some of that stereo width you want but watch out for phase cancellation and comb filtering when they are combined. try close mic'ing the amp and a nice room mic....don't use the amp's reverb they all sound real bad and you can't change it once you've recorded it...
Don't rely on the Pod's stereo output to give you a wide stereo gtr. I'd say go mono from the Pod, and do multiple takes with different, but complimentary, sounds (different gtr/pickup on each take, different amp model, etc).
