Is there a right or a wrong way to fit an exhaust manifold gasket? I'm replacing the manifold gasket on a B20E engine and the gasket is symmetrical but one side has metal inserts and the other side is plain, but the plain side has 'UT' stamped on it. Could UT mean out, so that the metal side faces the cylinder head? My workshop manuals make no mention about which side is which.

Hi, UT does indeed mean "Out". Metal side of the gasket goes to the block.. Details for the change on 700/900 series (which may be of assistance) here: .... Des. . . ;)

Thanks Des, you're a life saver, without that info I would have to do some decorating, now I'll make myself a cup of tea then get it started on the Volvo. Bliss.
