Don't know about the heat shield but your oil could be from your transfer box. Where on the exhaust is the oil? If your transfer box is leaking then oil will drip from this and when you're moving along it will end up on your catalytic converter. This then produces the burning smell. If the oil is from your transfer box then I would suggest getting it checked out. Sarge '99 V70 AWD:Dancing_chief:

Did you ever get the heat shield fixed, and find out where the oil was leaking?? Just nice to know!!

Hi, the oil could well be coming from the turbo oil drain, there's a gasket on the drain pipe connection to the turbo and an 'o' ring on the pipe where it enters the crankcase, the 'o' ring tends to harden with age/heat and stops sealing. The parts don't cost much but the biggest problem is getting at it all to replace them, the transfer box usually has to come off, unless anyone has found someone that can do the job without removing the transfer box?
