Okay, for the last two weeks I have been killing myself(Including staying up two days in a row while still going to my corporate day job), trying to find a reliable midi only sequencer. I found Opcode Vision 2.5 for windows, unfortunately its for win 98 only as the OMS part does not work in XP. I will build a new machine for that. But lo and behold, I begun this whole thing trying to do it in Reaper and did a full circle back to Reaper, after two weeks. So I'm starting this thread as a plea for help on tweaking Reaper to be a super reliable, no jumps, no interrupts, minimal midi jitter(including hardware suggestions)perfect functioning Midi Only Sequencer. Any help and tips will of course be appreciated. thanks p.s. this is all for hardware module sequencing ala Akai Z4 and a EMU 6400 ULTRA, no vst's, no internal audio at all.

Okay Heres my first tip, and its quite surprising btw, using dummy audio at 1 sample and 1000hz works like a charm, i think iit is as close to a hardware sequencer as your going to get

The tip was in the audio driver selection on Win Xp use Dummy audio, and select the checkboxes for Sample Rate and Block Size, sample rate should be 1000 and block size should be 1, there's no audio involved so no buffers to worry about. Alas though, I have moved on to OSX for the moment and it feels a little more stable including using an actual audio driver as I am composing a song under the acapella track of a writer/singer, thus no problems thus far.

A tip to beat the first one, in the Midi Device Options under the Midi Out selections when you double click the Midi out of choice to enable it, there is an option to put it in Low Latency/Low Precision mode, this is independent of the ASIO buffer setting and eliminates external gear MIDI Latency, as well as keeps your ASIO driver active Please remember these tips are more for controlling external midi gear. This tip will not reduce the latency with Virtual Instruments as they are dependent on the ASIO buffers and its inherent latency. Also to avoid having midi notes recorded out of sync be sure to UN-CHECK "Use audio driver reported latency" which is located under the Recording options in the Preferences...lower left.
