I'm mixing in 24 bit 44.1k. The project is one stereo track (wav file) that I normalize and render. When I render to wav, I have no problems. When I render to mp3, I get a little noise at the beginning of the track, like a quick "flick" or cd skip sound. I can't figure out why this is happening. I've changed the bit rate, I've changed the little drop down box that says "GOOD" or "BEST" (I forget what that option is), I've tried putting different fades at the beginning of the track, and nothing I've tried seems to work. Any idea why this is there or how I can get rid of it? I'd rather not use a different program to turn my wav files into mp3, but I will if I absolutely have to. I would think Reaper would be capable of such an easy task, though.
I have seen that happen on rare occassions, not only with reaper but with other apps as well. I commonly render mp3's out of reaper with no problems. I am wondering if you might care to test a couple ways: 1- try to render some other project or wav file to mp3 with reaper and see if you get the same problem consistently [or not] 2- first render out your project as a wav [which you say works OK], then load that single wav file into an empty project and render that out as the mp3 this might give a clue as to what is causing the problem, you see?

Happens to me all the time. What fixes it? If I drag to select time for the whole project, it usually will then be fine. I'm no coder, but it has something to do with cursor/loops. Seems to be an issue if you try to render a project where maybe the time selection is looped. And yep, it's just a lame mp3 thing
I never had this problem until some time after Reaper v4, before that I used Reaper to encode my mp3s direct from the 24bit master with great results. Around the time V4 was released I started using a different program to batch convert mp3s instead, but a couple of months ago I tried to do it with Reaper and I got this 'click' you describe. It hasn't worked for me since, wav rendering is fine but every mp3 gets that noise at the beginning.
just was curious since I never have had this problem much in reaper currently running the latest 32 bit pre on XP SP3 render to mp3 is just fine... no click at the start... so wonder if when you have this if you have FX on the tracks and if so are they the cause of this?
you surely have been a hero at testing ... good work... DC offset... ok then... there are fixes for that for sure... wonder if you might just chop off the first 30 sec's of the wav file and upload it for others to have a shot at?

Like I said, what has worked for me so far is simply selecting the entire song (kinda a random drag across the whole thing) and it's always worked so far. Like the OP said, wav is NOT an issue. but if the DC thing works........sweet.
