Thanks for the link it provided more info than I have been able to come up with in my own search..this has obviously been discussed at length in the past ..any other links would be greatly appreciated as searching on my slowwww connection is a frustrating experience.
If your onboard IDE controller supports ATA 66, I wouldn't worry about it. I would put your 2nd HD on the Secondary IDE Port of your motherboard. Even if your drive is ATA 100 the actual throughput of the drive will not be beyond what the ATA 66 controller can provide. This way you won't have to worry about conflicts with a new controller card. If you have a burner on the secondary then you can slave it off your system drive on IDE #1. Hope that helps, Shawn

Hi Shawn, thanks for the reply. I have a new Dell4100 1ghz..I believe it is ata100. I'm using a USB Iomega CDRW..not the best but it is left over from my laptop setup. In my tower is myIDE channel 1 master 20gig ata100 7200rpm HD, my new 30gig Maxtor ata100 7200rpm slaved to it and my CDR on IDE secondary master. If i understand you correctly I should just swap my new HD with the CDR (and reset the new HD to master). Any problems with having the CDR as a slave? This would certainly be the easist way to go and save me a PCI slot and IRQ. Thanks again
Having the CD-R as slave shouldn't be a problem, depending on how fast it is... If it's not a superfast one, I wouldn't worry. You aren't going to be using it while protools is running, so it should be OK. That's how mine is, and my 4x has no problems at all. [ July 19, 2001: Message edited by: ReniuR ]
Thanks to all for the input..it has taken me a couple of days to respond as I've been out on the road doing some gigs. I'll have a couple of days this week to reconfigure and will post my results. Thanks for the help Bryan
Most motherboards ship with cables for a "standard" setup... One Ultra ATA/66 (80 wire) for a single hard drive, and one 40 wire IDE cable intended for an int. CD-rom. Also, most Ultra ATA/66+ capable drives come supplied with an Ultra ATA ribbon.
quote:
Originally posted by Allen Hallada: Hey Bryan, Make sure that the cable you are using for the secondary IDE is for ATA/100. I've seen alot of people hooking their hard drives to the secondary IDE channel and not using a ATA/100 cable. Alot of manufacturers only send one ATA/100 cable and the other one is ATA/33. <snip> Allen
