Problem recording with Dell Inspiron 1521

Hello there, i have the aforementioned laptop that i am using for my recording. i am having problems with what seems to be the firewire card. it will work for a bit, then i wont be able to record, or even hear through my audio interface, that is plugged in through my fireware port. so anyways, what is the reccomended card to replace it with?? if you can find one, please link me to somewhere i can buy it, or something of the like.. thank you for all the help! Which audio interface are you using? How is it powered (can you use a separte power supply, not the FW bus power?)

My Interface is a "Presonus Firestudio Project" i am not drawing power from the laptop. its got a power cord.
