What firewire chipset do you have in that laptop??? (Hint: System Control Panel, Hardware devices) Pretty much ALL interface manufacturers demand that you use Texas Instruments firewire chips for proper operation. Even if you have to drop a cardbus or pcmcia card in it, you'll probably solve the problem by getting one with TI chips. SIIG and Belkin make respected cards that don't cost a lot.

please see this thread I have a few dell laptops to record with and similar issues With the RME cards they dont care if its ricoh or ti, they work fine but with the line 6 and motu cards its hard to get going
I have a Dell Precision M70 laptop. It did not come with a built-in firewire port, so I use a firewire card that plugs into the PCI slot on the laptop. The firewire card is based on an NEC firewire chipset and works perfectly as long as I connect and turn on my audio interface (an Edirol FA-101) before I turn on the laptop. It does not work properly if the computer is turned on first. The firewire card that I use is a no-name cheapo that I bought on Ebay for about $20. I've been using it for almost 2 years. So if you have a built in firewire port that is not compatible with your audio interface you may be able to use a PCI based firewire card as a work-around. Tim

Also reported on other forums if you have Wi_fi disable it when recording. This may mean disabling the drivers in the Device Manager as well. You can make a hardware profile for this if required. HTH :)
